Built for the whole body, not the photo.

Irezumi is architecture. Dragons, tigers, wind, and water composed around your body's movement, planned as one piece, tattooed session by session.

Scale is the style

A Japanese piece isn't a picture placed on skin, it's a composition that wraps a limb or a back, using background (wind bars, water, clouds) to carry the eye around the body and tie every element into one garment of ink. That only works when it's planned whole: the consultation for a sleeve or back piece starts with the finished composition, not the first session.

How large-scale work runs

  • Consultation & composition, subject, symbolism, placement, and how the piece flows with your build.
  • Outline session(s), the full framework goes on first, so the piece reads as one work from day one.
  • Background & shading, the wind, water, and black that give the main subjects their power.
  • Color, packed last, against completed structure, in the classic palette.

Sessions are spaced for healing, usually a few weeks apart, and you'll know the full plan, including the number of sessions to expect, before the first needle. Single-motif Japanese pieces (a dragon on a forearm, a tiger on a thigh) follow the same rules at smaller scale.

Japanese questions

Planning the big piece

How many sessions does a sleeve or back piece take?

It depends on scale, detail, and how your skin takes ink, which is exactly what the consultation maps out. You'll get a session-by-session plan and a realistic total before committing to the first outline.

Can we start small and extend it later?

Yes, if it's planned that way from the start. Tell Clayton where you might take it eventually, and the first piece will be composed so a future sleeve or back can grow out of it cleanly instead of fighting it.

Does the symbolism matter, or can I just love the imagery?

Both are fine, but the classic pairings (dragon with tiger, koi with maple leaves) carry meanings worth knowing before they're on you forever. The consultation covers what your chosen subjects traditionally represent.
